Supplies monitoring insecticide resistance and procurement of WHO test kits

WHO test kits for adults and larval vectors, which incorporate the insecticide-impregnated test papers, are currently only produced by the Vector Control Research Unit (VCRU), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, Malaysia. The Vector Ecology and Management Unit of the WHO Department for Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) provides technical oversight including facilitation of the supply of insecticide active ingredients by respective manufacturers. Demand for VCRU-produced kits and papers for mosquitoes rose sharply in recent years, especially from 2016 until the present, with the recognition of the central role of insecticide resistance testing in monitoring the effective planning and implementation of insecticide-based vector control. Demand for test papers and kits has also increased from dengue and Zika-affected countries.
